Handgun

"Any gun will do, if you will do."  -Front Sight Academy

We recommend a high quality sturdy handgun.  Many of our teaching techniques are centered around semi-automatic firearms.  That being said, we certainly welcome revolver shooters to the course.  Please bring a handgun that is in good condition, functional, and most importantly SAFE!

Some brands that we recommend are:

Holsters

Where to start!  If you are taking a course that requires presentation from a holster selecting the holster can be a trying and confusing process.  There are many holster styles and configurations.  You must bring a holster which can mount to your waistline.  This means shoulder, ankle, chest, crossdraw, thigh, and small of back holster are not allowed at A&M Shooting Acadmey.

Types:  Outside the Waist Band and Inside the Waist Band

Outside the Waist Band                        Inside the Waist Band

We recommend an outside the waistband type holster for your first class.  While Inside the waistband holsters are commonly used for concealed carry, they can make it difficult to re-holster your handgun.

Materials:  Nylon, Leather, Kydex

Holster are made in a variety of materials.  A&M shooting recommends that you bring a sturdy leather or kydex holster.

We HIGHLY recommend that you DO NOT bring a nylon type holster.  These are often marketed as "Universal" and "Tactical".  The problem with many nylon holsters is that they have no support when the gun is not in the holster.  It is paramount that you are able to re-holster your handgun with one hand, if you are unable to do this with your current holster, it is time to upgrade.

Leather is a widely used material.  If you choose to purchase a leather holster, make sure it is actually fitted for your particular handgun.  As you can see in the picture above, the contours of the holster mold to the shape of the particular gun it contains( A 1911 in this case).

Kydex is a great material because it doesn't need to be worn in, will never wear out, are innexpensive and is shaped exactly for your particular model.  Uncle Mike's is a popular manufacturer of the kydex holster and can be found in Sportsman's Warehouse, Cabelas, and many area gun shops.

Sturdy Belt and Clothing

Bring your sturdy camping/outdoor clothing.  There will be a lot of heavy items on the waistline of your pants.  Dress Accordingly.  Your pants should have sturdy belt loops and you should wear a sturdy leather or work type belt.
